FILM United States 2025 · 91 min
Ivy Meeropol

“The personal is political” is an essential tenet of feminism, but advice columnist E. Jean Carroll didn’t set out to become a feminist icon. After going public with rape accusations against Donald Trump, her steely courage and conviction became a beacon of hope in post-#MeToo America. In Ask E. Jean, director Ivy Meeropol offers a riveting, deeply personal exploration of Carroll’s rape and defamation cases, deftly weaving righteous outrage with the fizzy humor of her ’90s Ask E. Jean advice show. Carroll’s quick wit and level-headed takes on love crackle – until Trump’s attack in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room forces her to confront the collision of her public voice and private trauma. Through years of trial drama — and Trump’s grotesque “she’s not my type” defense — Carroll emerges victorious, the only woman to have beaten him in court, twice. Ask E. Jean is a galvanizing, vivid portrait of a singular woman and a bold meditation on speaking truth to power. – Jessica Edwards

In a world where the dead must atone for their sins by collecting souls in Purgatory, Mauve – a weary Collector – arrives at the home of Raymond, a blind man nearing death. Disguised as a vacuum saleswoman (a choice eerily tied to Raymond’s past), Mauve prepares to carry out her task. But Raymond isn’t fooled – he’s felt Death’s presence before. What begins as a routine collection spirals into a profound conversation on guilt, fate, and what it means to truly see someone. As Mauve confronts her own trapped existence and Raymond confronts the memory of a lost lover, the line between duty and empathy begins to blur. Collectors is a lyrical, unsettling meditation on grief – asking whether redemption is possible for the living, and even for Death herself.

In 2017, 41 young girls from a Guatemalan state-run children's home were killed in a fire when their police guards refused to release them from a locked schoolroom. The event is emblematic of the wider epidemic of gender-based violence in Guatemala, and the spark that drives sisters Lesli and Lupe to action. Told from the perspective of young women who have survived and whose lives have been shaped by violence, the film documents efforts to rally the community to collective protest through art and performance, culminating in a vivid, raucous festival through the streets of Ciudad Peronia. Conveyed through a series of sensitive portraits of girlhood and creativity, Vickie Curtis and Doug Anderson’s film is an powerful ode to the plight, power and resilience of girls.

YUCA

The journey of two storks on an ordinary workday reveals the urgent crisis in maternal health care in the United States. One stork has a relatively safe trip to deliver her baby, while the other faces significant dangers, risking her life; each obstacle serves as a metaphor for various forms of violence or obstetric complications. Throughout her journey, the protagonist visually deconstructs herself, just as she does the idealization of motherhood. A layer of reality begins to take over the screen through experimental manual painting. Upon reaching the maternity ward, the stark difference between the two storks becomes clear: the one who barely survived is the one delivering a Black baby.

In 1934-35, two young American artists, Philip Guston and Reuben Kadish, painted a visionary 1,000-square-foot mural titled The Struggle Against Terrorism in the courtyard of a former imperial palace in Morelia, Mexico. Commissioned with the support of the Mexican government and executed at just 21 years old, the mural foretold the horrors of war and fascism on the eve of WWII.
When Alex and Julie learn that they’ve been cheated on by the same man, they agree to do the mature thing: meet up and trauma bond. What begins as a bizarre support group in a grungy women’s bar bathroom, snowballs into an unconventional meet-cute that leaves them both enamored with each other. Unable to state the obvious, they joke, “Same time, next year?” Except it’s not a joke. Because one year later, both of them show up. And again, the year after that. We follow them in the same bar bathroom until a final moment of intimacy reveals that they can’t stall any longer. After four years, it’s time to face the elephant in the (bath)room – can they see each other beyond the hurt that brought them together? Or is all of this just a really, really bad idea?

THE BEND IN THE RIVER

FILM United States 2025 · 82 min
Robb Moss

Over four decades, filmmaker Robb Moss has returned to document the same friend circle—first as free-spirited river guides in the ’70s (Riverdogs), then as middle-aged adults in The Same River Twice (2003). Now, in The Bend in the River, he revisits them in their seventies, reflecting on paths shaped by love, loss, and resilience. An exceptional example of longitudinal filmmaking and executive produced by Joel Coen and Frances McDormand, the film feels like sitting with old companions and confronting memories of marriages, illnesses, and deferred dreams. Everyday moments take on quiet poetry, but none more lyrical than their time together on the river. As they look back at old footage and forward to their final chapters, the juxtaposition of youthful idealism and present-day fragility lands with unexpected power. A moving meditation on aging, The Bend in the River captures the current of life itself.

Nikola Duravcevic

A man survives alone in a sealed glass house. His days follow a strict pattern: chess against himself, a can of sardines, and humming Chopin into the silence. He reads, remembers, and lives among flickering visions of his wife and child – ghosts of a happy life. The only thing pulling him from these waking dreams is changing the oxygen filters. It keeps him alive, but reminds him of all he’s lost. One day, a light appears on the horizon. Silent. Steady. Is it real, or just madness? And with the light, his wife and child vanish. Now that he’s truly alone, is life in the glass box a sanctuary or a tomb? Then the light begins to blink. Morse code? A call? He rises, steps into a small boat, and rows toward it. The Light is a wordless meditation on memory, grief, and what might await when we let go

The title is taken from maritime folklore about a whale that’s been labeled the “loneliest whale on the planet” because he can only emit sounds at 52 Hertz, a frequency that no other whale can hear. It’s believed that “Whale 52,” as he’s known, travels the oceans of the world desperately searching for other whales like himself. Some believers even suggest that the sounds he makes are cries for help. When his school assigns him to Mr. Kaufman, a lonely 80-year-old volunteer who’s mourning the death of his male partner, Enam and Mr. Kaufman embark on a poignant journey by means of a magical journal which enables them to hear – and heal – each other’s silent cries.
