Set in the small rural town of Fairfax, Oklahoma, Country Doctor tells the story of a community fighting to save its only hospital. Fairfax Community Hospital, a lifeline for a town of 1,263 and the surrounding countryside, went bankrupt in 2019. Staff worked without pay to keep it alive until the hospital was sold at auction to a California physician for 2.1 million dollars. At the heart of the film is Dr. James Graham, one of only two doctors serving the hospital, three clinics and the nursing home. Beloved by patients, he still makes house calls while urgently seeking help to keep the doors open, even traveling to the state capitol. Alongside him are Joe and Carol Conner, publishers of the local newspaper, and new hospital owner Dr. Elizabeth Pusey. Filmed over three years, Country Doctor captures resilience, small-town spirit and the struggle for rural health care.
