Manifesto
The Science New Wave turns down the conventions of the traditional science film — the authoritative voice, the tidy explanation — in favour of experiment and personal expression. Six traits hold it together. Like anything alive, they will keep changing.

The Science New Wave was founded on 26 August 2016 in Lairoux, a commune on the west coast of France.
At a town hall meeting, citizen scientists presented years of data on the collapse of the local bat population. To almost everyone's surprise they ended not with a conclusion but with a short experimental film, shot from the point of view of one distressed bat — research and surrealism in the same breath.
Many, though not all, agreed that fusing science, the imaginary and cinema mattered. One attendee went home and drafted the first version of the manifesto. It draws on early cinema and on developmental biology in equal measure.

The Luminary Awards
The festival's prizes are decided by the community itself. Every Luminary holds a vote.
Submitting a film
Entries come through FilmFreeway. Luminaries get until 31 August and a fee waiver. Entries for XIX have closed.
Everywhere at once
The whole programme screens online, so a film from Lagos and its audience in Lima meet on the same night.
