In 1934-35, two young American artists, Philip Guston and Reuben Kadish, painted a visionary 1,000-square-foot mural titled The Struggle Against Terrorism in the courtyard of a former imperial palace in Morelia, Mexico. Commissioned with the support of the Mexican government and executed at just 21 years old, the mural foretold the horrors of war and fascism on the eve of WWII. Its unique voice, distinct from Mexican muralism, led to its concealment for over 30 years beneath layers of lime. Rediscovered in the 1970s, the mural was eventually restored thanks to the initiative of The Guston Foundation and the collaboration of Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History.
