Over four decades, filmmaker Robb Moss has returned to document the same friend circle—first as free-spirited river guides in the ’70s (Riverdogs), then as middle-aged adults in The Same River Twice (2003). Now, in The Bend in the River, he revisits them in their seventies, reflecting on paths shaped by love, loss, and resilience. An exceptional example of longitudinal filmmaking and executive produced by Joel Coen and Frances McDormand, the film feels like sitting with old companions and confronting memories of marriages, illnesses, and deferred dreams. Everyday moments take on quiet poetry, but none more lyrical than their time together on the river. As they look back at old footage and forward to their final chapters, the juxtaposition of youthful idealism and present-day fragility lands with unexpected power. A moving meditation on aging, The Bend in the River captures the current of life itself.
