She used local villagers as actors and provides the occasional comment herself. There are tragicomic scenes under the tree in the heart of the village, where the menfolk gather to discuss the dire situation. The high-flown French in the newspaper read aloud by the teacher has little relevance to their daily life.</p> <p>Faye also takes time for the daily routines of village life: children at play, and women at work on the arid land, cooking on a wood fire and sifting the millet. The subtle storyline meanders through it all—as does the indirect criticism of an agricultural policy that promotes monoculture, ultimately harvesting only poverty.</p>

<p>A couple refuses to accept that summer is over. For a last time, they head to the coast with the intention of spending two afternoons together between sand dunes and sea water. The temperatures have long been too cold for sandals and shorts; the blustery autumn wind is no substitute for cosy rays of summer sun. On the way to the beach, they cross paths with a woman they know loosely. Upon arrival, they look in vain for a dune to take shelter from the wind; a small dam is built and defended hard against the tide, an attempt to erect a windbreak is made.
