Living on an isolated farm on the outskirts of town, Piero Arca and his son Giuliano devote their lives to rescuing and caring for injured animals. Ostracized by the influential Nonne family, whose hostility is fueled by Giuliano's friendship with one of their sons, their fragile existence is shattered when Piero disappears during a snowfall and their animals are slaughtered. As Giuliano searches for his missing father, he falls in love with Maddalena, the daughter of a local notary allied with the Nonne. Together they seek refuge in a hidden sanctuary inhabited by a small community of refugees, discovering hope, compassion, and resilience amid persecution.
