Lena, an optimistic college student, takes on a writing class—her only student is Hugo Drowak, a bitter, alcoholic misanthrope. He once wrote love poems with great passion, until a disappointment drove him to alcohol and isolation. Despite his harsh words, Lena doesn't give up: she firmly believes that everyone deserves a second chance and tries to rekindle Hugo's creativity.
