“Years ago, I was working on a movie…”

FILM France 2022 · 45 min
Marion Naccache

Years ago, director Marion Naccache got lost in New York City traffic with Tom Jarmusch, brother of Jim Jarmusch, who is also connected to cinema. At the wheel, Tom rambles on about his many stories of the independent cinema of the 90’s in which he worked, the people he met and the many transformations of the city. That meeting between these two friends of different generations and nationalities does not have a destination that is revealed to us, and we soon realize that the traffic that takes them along is what allows us to spend more time in their company. So we are in no hurry: as long as there is traffic we can follow all those stories and the tender lights of the city. A documentary of delight and colorful hearts.

A History of the Film Spectator

FILM Portugal 2023 · 60 min
José Filipe Costa

Normally, the spectator is thought of as being in a situation of passivity in relation to what is happening on the screen, but this film wants to deepen this idea: what types of spectators do we become? How has the relationship between spectator and screen evolved? What’s the history that can be traced?

A History of the World According to Getty Images

FILM Norway, United Kingdom 2022 · 19 min
Richard Misek

This thought-provoking short film examines the meaning of the term “public domain,” and what happens to images whose copyright has expired and theoretically become freely available to all. Why is it that this type of image so often falls into the hands of commercial organizations such as Getty Images, which then requires payment to use them? What are the implications of putting images of historical events behind a paywall?

Archive footage of events such as the 1937 Hindenburg airship disaster and the US atom bomb tests on Bikini Atoll in the 1940s and 50s are etched into our collective memory. This documentary argues that such images should not be held hostage by profit-motivated parties. It’s a philosophy that the film itself puts into practice, ingeniously liberating this footage from the grip of commercial interests.

Between genuine scenes of a gathering and intimate testimonies dyed by the golden sunlight, these women who don’t shave will claim their choice in an uninhibited and surprising way (for its freedom, but also for its frankness, not eliminating from the speech any insecurities or fragilities). Niwa no sunaba (Garden Sandbox)

FILM Japan 2022 · 69 min
Yukinori Kurokawa

After some misunderstanding, Sakaguchi is hired to make a tourist guide video on Tobako (a fictitious name for Kawaguchi) in the outskirts of Tokyo. This element in the script sparks off a fanciful wandering strewn with unexpected meetings. First with Kitagawa, thanks to whom Sakaguchi landed the job. Then with a seamstress, and then with Yoshino, with whom a half-hearted romance emerges. Thus the narrative unfolds, in halts and swerves, espousing unexpected meetings, and offering the strolling character an opportunity for displacements from one place to the next. The deserted town has come to a standstill – the shooting took place during the lockdown – and this acts as a metaphor for the idleness of the characters. GARDEN SANDBOX is light and nimble, whereas its main character hasa limp. Her demeanour and her stiff body exude a peculiar quality, somewhat comically at odds with the setting. Apathetically playing along, the young woman gleans from each character some pieces of information about the town and, then, touch by touch she delineates its picture: ultimately, the place comes acrossas a post-industrial locale whose foundries are now obsolete. Sakaguchi’s very meanderings lead her to a rich family’s house for a sewing lesson. In this pivotal scene, the lady of the house invites her to don an upper-class wedding dress. Through a gesture both radical and powerful, which itself informs the dynamic of the film as a whole, a gleeful snip of the scissors transforms the item of clothing into the ultimate chic of haute-couture design. What weaves together this truant escape whose motifs and fabric seem inspired by Jacques Rozier’s films, a crumbling industrial heritage and the transforming of a traditional wedding dress? With GARDEN SANDBOX, whose title is a reference to the type of sand used in the foundries, joyfully and playfully, Yukinori Kurokawa interrogates the concepts of mutation and (re)use as sources of boundless possibilities.

College F, known colloquially as Tolstoy College, was an anarchist educational community which operated within the University at Buffalo between 1969 and 1985. At once a sweeping portrayal of the college’s meeting places and the state of the campus today, Growing Up Absurd layers memories and traces of history to convey the lived experiences of its participants.

Stefan, a Romanian construction worker living in Brussels, is on the verge of moving back home. He cooks up a big pot of soup with leftovers in his fridge as a goodbye gift for friends and family. As he is about to leave, he meets a young Belgian-Chinese woman who is working in a little restaurant while researching her doctorate on mosses. Her attention to the near-invisible stops him in his tracks.

A hunter-gatherer of beauty in urban landscapes, Bas Devos knows how to tell stories through images. Berlinale audiences beheld this talent in his films Violet (Generation, 2014) and Hellhole (Panorama, 2019). In Here, the Belgian filmmaker’s ability to register the invisible and the untold performs many a small c. Unfolding in beautiful tableaux in 4:3 format, his work features characters in whose presence we want to feel the here and now, just as they do. Observing his central duo, played by the radiant Stefan Gota and Liyo Gong, as they discover each other, Devos’ gaze is as moving as it is delicate. And what more solid way for a bond to grow between two people than with their feet firmly rooted in Mother Nature’s soft carpeting? It is more fragile than cement, but it is our true terrain.

The cityscape of Brasília: a clogging of industry, automobiles and endless looping paved roads and highways. Occasionally a displaced wild animal, be it a monkey or an ant eater, scampers across a street. The unlucky will be casualties on the road, and the lucky will end up in a zoo. In her striking debut feature, filmmaker Ana Vaz weaves a mesmerising, poetic odyssey exploring the contamination of urban expansion on the natural world.

Shot on grainy 16mm, a format itself looming towards extinction, Vaz’s feature frames the landscape in the day-for-night wet blues of an endless twilight. Incorporating the eeriness of eco-horror with the ethnographic nature of a documentary, as the animals peering back at us from their cages and enclosures morph into a dizzying, poignant symbol of colonial displacement. A haunting, almost militarised score by the late legendary composer Guilherme Vaz propels us through this deeply textured and memorable meditation.

Jan Švankmajer

An astonishing array of paintings, drawings, sculptures, prints, objects and materials fill room after room – but this is not a museum open to the general public. It is the home of the celebrated artist couple Jan Švankmajer and his late wife Eva, situated in the Czech Republic’s Horní Staňkov Castle.

Like Guillermo del Toro with his self-curated Bleak House in Los Angeles, the Švankmajers took their inspiration from the wunderkabinett (cabinet of curiosities) lovingly assembled by Rudolf II in the early 17th century. The film’s title Kunstkamera is a pun on the Emperor’s Kunstkammer – for here, Jan Švankmajer has wittily converted a stroll by an unseen figure through his home into a film that seems infinite.

For a creator who has been described as an “animator-warlock and cinematographer-alchemist”, there is no rational order to the arrangement of items in this vast collection – only free association and poetic profusion. Švankmajer, now 88, has declared KUNSTKAMERA to be his final work. Edited to the music of Vivaldi (note for the ears: it sounds just as good played backwards!), KUNSTKAMERA will stir fond memories for those cinephiles who have loved the Švankmajer films (dating back to 1964) proudly showcased at IFFR for decades.

Mother and daughter Silvia and Andrea are also ufologists. Merging scenes of sometimes quirky conversations between the two women – for example when they wonder what they would do if they were to adopt Alf from the eponymous television series – against a backdrop of sunsets, with amateur images of UFOs and appearances of characters from another world, Maximiliano Schonfeld paints the portrait of a community, with humour and great tenderness. In keeping with his previous documentary LA SIESTA DEL TIGRE (2016), this new work is a poetic immersion into a place, into his region of Entre Rios, an artisanal documentary of science and of fiction. One day, Andrea will go, leaving Silvia to dream alone.

Maputo Nakuzandza

FILM Brazil, Mozambique 2022 · 60 min
Ariadine Zampaulo

In the blue hues of dawn, by a stationary merry-go-round, young people stagger home as workers in suits make their way to work. Radio Maputo Nakuzandza, 5:15 am: the first lights of day illuminate this magnificent opening shot. After immersing us in the daily life of the great city of Maputo, capital of Mozambique, the film comes to a close as night falls. Ariadine Zampaulo elegantly orchestrates an urban symphony whose findings never cease to surprise us, such as the radio program which runs as a common thread alongside a choreographed dérive. The words of residents and ambient sounds broadcast are interwoven unexpectedly into the sequences, to make the city heard in a film that is in constant, meandering movement. Figures meet then lose each other in the immense urban space: a jogger roams the main arteries of the city from morning to evening, a tourist with Keatonian gestures wanders around, a young fiancée having escaped from her wedding drifts like a ghost. In blending documentary- style shots, fictional scenes and dance performances in the ruins of abandoned buildings, Zampaulo composes a kaleidoscopic portrait of Maputo rather than following a single track. The urban landscape reveals the traces of its colonial past while the verses of the greatest Mozambican poets resound. In a sweeping yet precise gesture, Ariadine Zampaulo seeks to comprehend the city through its multiple branches, embracing History and the immediacy of the present. A film-poem with polyphonic prose, Maputo Nakuzandza (“Maputo I Love You”) is nothing less than an ode to the city, and to life. (Louise Martin Papasian)

Preciado’s literate, charming conceptual approach casts 26 trans and non-binary people as different versions and evocations of Woolf’s famous gender nonconformist, using the book as a starting point to talk about both the social and metaphorical meanings of transness and how Woolf’s reflections on the body untethered from both time and gender normativity remain radical. Fleet and visually inventive, Preciado’s film is finally a robust polemical inquiry into contemporary trans personhood and political disenfranchisement that points the way toward a possible utopia. Amanda Devulsky

In her film entitled Rough Red, Amanda Devulsky endeavours to tell History differently, to show the reverse angle of political action, as well as to postulate that another form of resistance is possible. By shedding light on the lived experience of those who are unseen in public space, she has authored a historiography of the hidden. We’re following the lives of Jô, Eunice, Alessa and Fabiana, four women who were still teenagers when they became mothers, at a time when Brazil itself was becoming a democracy, during the 1985-1995 decade, in Brasilia. Four women experiencing the strains of motherhood, and whose struggles were not played out in public but rather in the private space of the home. Blending personal archives with images shot in 2018, during the campaign leading up to Jair Bolsonaro’s election, Amanda Devulsky constructs a monumental narrative.

Lois Patiño

The Tibetan Book of the Dead, or Bardo Thödol, describes the three transitional phases between death and rebirth. In the first part of Samsara, which comprises two narrative sections and a sensational centerpiece, a young man in Laos reads the book to an elderly woman. He befriends several monks—young males like him—from the nearby monastery, and they meet at the magnificent waterfalls of Kuang Si to discuss their plans for the future. The woman, meanwhile, is ready to take leave of her present existence.

The story continues on the other side of the world, the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, where we see a goat kid being born and coming under the care of an Islamic family. But this section only starts after filmmaker Lois Patiño has presented the viewer with an awe-inspiring transitional section that can only be fully experienced with closed eyes. It transforms Samsara into more than a film—this is a unique cinematic experience, a meditative journey exploring different perspectives on life and death.

FILM France 2023 · 11 min
Maxime Martinot

The warning labels found on some new microwave ovens may have comedic value (where but in America would users be warned not to put their pet in the device?) but we rarely notice the disclaimers preceding films. In fact, they are even more absurd: one very common one is “This is a work of fiction.” But producers, distributors and cinema owners protect themselves from accusations of offense caused by all sorts of other potential issues, like people of the same sex kissing, special effects, drug use, violence, unsafe behavior, and even cinematic experimentation.

The fear of having to pay the price for being misunderstood can be traced back to the very beginnings of film—as proven by these disclaimers from the 1874–2022 period. While the tone of this litany of warnings may be deeply ironic, the feeling gradually creeps up on you that this legal straitjacket could fatally constrict the unique ability of film to imagine the unknown, and to suspend disbelief.

Viktoria Schmid

"Five... four... three... two... one," chants an older man into the microphone. He replaces the obligatory unspoken "zero" of the countdown with a dynamic backward twist of his upper body. The point of his finger, which twists backward with him, provokes a change in the shot to reveal the view of a bulging baroque dust cloud being sucked inside a building by a nearly unstoppable force, from which, in a din, an imposing structure in its entire, undamaged splendor emerges. This process occurs five times altogether from various perspectives and distances. One seems reminded of the legendary explosion at the end of Michelangelo Antonioni´s Zabriskie Point, but with a decisive difference: Viktoria Schmid re-demolishes. Her working material comprises private recordings from viewers who witnessed the demolition of the building parts of the Eastman Kodak company complex in Rochester and published their self-filmed documentary clips onto YouTube. Many of them had worked in the factory, which makes them witnesses to the destruction of their former workplace. Viktoria Schmid compiled the clips and played them backwards. In the regenerative movement, the implosion turns into an act of constituting. And thus, the reducing to rubbles of the building parts becomes a spectacular reconstruction, accompanied by the amazed shouts of the audience ("WOW" is the palindrome of the moment!). In this way, using digital means, a party-like tribute is paid to the glorious resurrection of the factory for color-sensitive analogue film. (Melanie Letschnig)

Angela Schanelec

Leading contemporary German filmmaker Angela Schanelec (I Was at Home, But…, NYFF57) is singularly adept at creating dramas of unexpected catharsis via the most oblique narrative strategies. Her latest film, Music, pushes this approach to new levels of emotionality. Using abstract gestures and broad narrative ellipses, yet still managing to plumb the depths of its characters’ complicated traumas, Music tells the story of a young man and woman unknowingly united by the same violent death. Brought together by fate and horrible irony, Ion (Aliocha Schneider) and Iro (Agathe Bonitzer) first meet in prison, where he’s an inmate and she’s a guard; they kindle a romance fomented by passion for classical music and opera, followed by marriage and children. Yet as in all tragedies, the past returns to haunt them. Inspired by the Oedipus myth, Schanelec has created an alternately austere and vivid portrait of grief and redemption through art told with her distinctive compositional rigor.
