From the Big-Bang, to understanding our place in the cosmos, we explore the Universe through the imagination of children. "The Universe Within" is a 4 episode series for kids made by kids, and the protagonists explain different astronomical concepts using metaphors invented by them, and create theories for the questions that have not yet been answered by science. Their explanations are illustrated by animations based on their own drawings so we can see how they imagine everything they are telling us about our Universe.
In the episode (The Beginning of the Universe) submitted for this festival, Joaquin (9) asks himself how the Universe began. He narrates a native Tehuelche myth about the Earth's origins. Then, he explains the Big Bang Theory, using metaphors and drawings of his own. Lastly, he questions the theory and comes up with his own answers.

Loop

Loop is about what can be seen and what cannot, how scientists imagine their work and how they describe it. The film is based on the work done in Dr Serge Mostowy's lab on septin assembly in cells, using a zebrafish model. Lab members describe the intricate sub-cellular septin dynamics and structure. Their explanatory drawings, and discussion with the filmmaker about how they see the research, are incorporated into the animation. Each person's unique and idiosyncratic vision of the process brings a different facet to the complex and secret world of septin cytoskeleton dynamics. The scientists' different theories of assembly reveal the creative and discursive nature of science. The scientists' original sketches, included at the end of the film, emphasises how closely they worked with the filmmaker to translate their individual vision to the whole.

Every life form originated from the same cells billions of years ago. First there was one cell that formed colonies, which became group of colonies that evolved into all kinds of species like trees, insects, giraffes and humans. All is connected, moves together and reacts to each other. There is no individual; we are groups of groups that form groups. One cannot be seen without the acknowledgement and existence of the other.
As a filmmaker and scientist we have so many questions about what we come from, what it means to exist, how do we form a being and what becomes of us? All these questions will mean a lifelong quest and journey, but it all starts with the fact that we as humans are 99,99999999% the same, that everything on our planet has originated from the same singular cell. Which means there is no I, but only we and we are all connected.

The Flow

The Flow looks at the supervening layers of reality that we can observe, from quarks to nucleons to atoms and beyond. The deeper we go into the foundations of reality the more it loses its form, eventually becoming a pure mathematical conception. Layer upon layer the flow builds new codes that create new codes, each version computing a new, more complex state based on the previous one.

'Evolution' is a short movie about the micro universe that is perceived through the eyes of a microscopist. The movie is especially constructed to emphasize the beauty of microscopy through organic audio-visual effects.
The journey starts by the full three dimensional reconstruction of the fruit fly and zebra-fish and from there we sequentially dive further down into cellular resolution to animated reconstruction of the DNA. Every step of the way from whole animal down to the DNA structure is beautifully reconstructed through sophisticated microscopy techniques. To fully enjoy this audio-visual microscopic travel, 'pump up the volume'.

Microscopic Leaps

Conceptual visualisations based on Eric Betzig's Nobel-winning work for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy. This tomographic technique uses light-sheets to provide a highly detailed, three-dimensional, animated view of the microscopic world revealing a groundbreaking picture of complex cellular processes and forms. The recordings of biological processes using this technique were artistically reinterpreted and recreated as 3d simulations which were then used to extract final images for print. Wearing Well

Wearing well is a collaboration between Enrico Milanese, Researcher in Computational Solid Mechanics and Markos Kay, Computational Artist. The film visually reimagines Milanese's research whereby the microscopic effects of contact and wear between materials are studied through the use of high-performance computing simulations of model systems. Kay interpreted the results of these experiments by creating conceptual simulations using 3D parametric surfaces and physical engines in combination with the original simulation output data.
Artist and scientist worked closely together to create the narrative of the film that shows the formation of particles when two surfaces are rubbed against one other. The aim is to shed light on this area of research that has far and wide implications in virtually all engineering applications: from vehicle break pads to hip joint prostheses. The underlying physics is common to all frictional systems, among which we find earthquake faults are of particular interest, sonified recordings of which can be found in the soundtrack.

Adopting the form of a video game trailer, Immunecraft presents a fictional game which gives users agency over a real life cell culture to compete against opponent players. It explores the parallels between popular gameplay mechanics and some of the most important principles of the human immune system, including cellular memory and autoimmunity.
It understands itself as a piece of speculative design futures, commenting on the principles of multiplayer online gaming in the age of DNA building blocks, printable organic electronics and biohacking, thus raising questions about bioethics.

A powers-of-10 exploration of the microscopic and molecular landscapes inside Björk's body. The animation was constructed from molecular models of DNA and proteins derived from various forms of scientific data such as x-ray crystallography. My work is usually defined by goals of didactic science education and accuracy, so this is the first time that I've strayed fully into the world of art, with the opportunity to mess around with the scientific data to create a whimsical and playful journey. Inside a cell nucleus the audience encounters Björk's ancestral spirit — her ghost in the machine — that watches over her genes as they flow from one generation to the next. The spirit manifests as a large molecular complex that was modeled from a three-dimensional head scan of Björk. The inspiration for the face came from the 'fruit face' paintings by the 16th-century Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo who took objects such as fruits, vegetables, or books and arranged them in such a way that they formed a portrait.

The animation Fighting Infection by Clonal Selection was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of a revolutionary theory called "Clonal Selection" by Nobel Laureate, Sir Frank Macfarlane Burnet. Narrated using simple yet scientifically accurate language, the animation tells the story of how the body fights against a common bacterial infection. Fighting Infection by Clonal Selection is a world-first in visualizing the immune system with both microscopic and atomic detail, and is firmly founded on scientific research. The animation was designed to raise the understanding of the immune system in the general public and as a teaching resource for university students and scientists.

Call of the Silent Cell is an experimental film of cellular behaviour centred on the interplay between the gut microbiome, the immune system and wider concerns regarding the symbiosis of human and environmental health.
The beautiful patterns of nature, as we might experience on a walk in the woods, can also be found in our bodies. Call of the Silent Cell gives you the opportunity to briefly enter this magical world as a storm breaks, revealing we are not as separated from nature as we think.
In the film you journey with an old man who wanders through a forest, meditating on the fragility of his body and the environment. A storm arrives, 'not of breath and air but of cells and their signals', revealing a disturbance in the body, an immune system in overdrive. Emerging from the storm the old man gains a new wisdom that his bodily health is deeply intertwined with the life of the forest.
The film reflects on the latest insights revealed by single cell analysis and was produced in collaboration with Human Cell Atlas members, Marcin Pekalski and Melanie Dunstan, based at the Wellcome Centre for Human Genetics, the University of Oxford.
Call of the Silent Cell is produced by Fusion Arts and commissioned by One Cell At A Time, a public engagement project with the Human Cell Atlas research initiative that is mapping every cell type in the human body. This work was funded in whole by Wellcome Trust Grant 218597/Z/19/Z.

A piece of paper is divided by hand into an even number of pieces and then reassembled. A photograph of this finished composition is then printed and divided again. This makes the impossible possible, tearing the now included empty spaces that make up the tears in the paper. The feedback division proces is repeated while the number of imprecise manual divisions gradually increase.
