Confluence

Noah Shulman

There is always movement, even in stillness. Things around us are constantly changing in tiny ways that we don't notice, eventually building up to growth and death. In "Confluence," a new film by director Noah Shulman, viewers look beyond what the human eye is capable of seeing to experience those moments in between the transformations that we perceive. Noah Shulman shot an array of processes both natural and mechanical at incredibly close range and in a controlled environment, allowing to isolate the micro-movements that constantly occur around us in a nearly balletic way. The film includes extreme close-ups of everything from magnetic to chemical and heat reactions, but it's up to the viewer to extrapolate out from what they can see to imagine the larger view that they can't. Created with specialty macro lenses and microscopes and shot in 4K resolution, the film reveals hauntingly beautiful movement at the microscopic level and reminds viewers that everything around them is in flux, even when the surface is calm. Tiny movements compound upon each other to create perceptible change. The film is part of Mental Fabrications, an installation by architect Ion Popian that aims to map the mind's mental landscape through electroencephalogram (EEG) and 3D printing. To do that, "Confluence" seeks to stimulate particular brain activities and reactions

At the time of dissection the wings had little or no color to them. They were placed in a special media that allows the wings to continue to survive, and over the course of 70 hrs (Painted Lady) the color patterns appear in the wings.

The indigenous creatures occupying Fumiya Island as its fauna are quadruped robots developed by researcher Fumiya Iida. The detritus of the lab forms the island's flora. The narration text is verbatim from the Charles Darwin from Chapter 17 of the Voyage of the Beagle-The Galapagos and is narrated by Andrew Berry, Alfred Wallace historian and an Organismic and Evolutionary Biology lecturer at Harvard University.

Beetle Bluffs

"Beetle Bluffs" brings to life the stories that accompany each specimen within a natural history collection. The film is by Anna Lindemann, developed in collaboration with Brian Farrell, Curator of Entomology at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology, home to one of the richest and historically most significant insect collections in North America. "Beetle Bluffs" is inspired by a pioneering 1938 paper on beetle mimicry by Philip Darlington, a former curator of the museum. Using artifacts from Darlington's research and the insect specimens cited in the original paper, "Beetle Bluffs" not only captures the beauty of biodiversity, but also illuminates predator-prey dynamics and dramatizes the evolution of mimicry.

Nzara '76

1976. An unknown outbreak rips through the border between Zaire and Sudan, decimating towns in its wake. An international team of doctors responds, discovering a swift, deadly disease from which few survive. The doctors split up, tracking the disease, trying to prevent its spread. Doctor's James Howell and Peter Franklin track the disease north, over the Sudan border. They stumble upon a town ravaged by the disease. With the town in panic and no doctor to help, the small clinic has fallen under the care of the head nurse Nyawela. The doctors quickly find themselves ill-prepared for the severity of the outbreak and resort to extreme measures to stop the disease, including burning bodies. This sets them in direct violation of the towns religious beliefs, wherein the body must be washed and buried as it feels, even after death. But the practice is also directly responsible for spreading the disease. As Nyawela tries to find ways to care for her patients, the doctors distance themselves, not wanting to be mire themselves beyond their mission. While taking samples one night, one of the patients slips into a seizure, causing James's hand to slip and stab himself with a contaminated needle. Fearing he's infected, James chooses to stay in the town and continue working rather than attempt evacuation. He soon forced to experience life as a patient, watching as Nzara's disease slowly becomes his own.

Anssi Kasitonni is a skateboarder and an award-winning artist from Sahalahti, Finland. He has worked in music, drawing and sculpture, but to many of his fans, the most beloved of his works are the short films he makes at his own farm. The films deal with age-old questions related to morality, love, death, generation gaps, sexuality and, of course, submarines. The ideas are epic, the films decidedly homespun. His movies create their own world that tells us something essential about ours. Kasitonni won the esteemed Ars Fennica Award in 2011.

Flight of a Small Northern Cloudyspot

When first asking for the identification I was informed moths land with the wings flat and butterflies upright. The creature has now been identified (possibly) as a cloudyspot better known as skippers and is in the butterfly family.
Working with the Edgertronic camera from the RISD Edna Lawrence Nature Lab. The recording was made at Blythwold Gardents in Bristol RI.
This clip has been processed three ways. The original recording is shot at 1/6000 of a second at a frame rate of 1000 samples per second. The first flight off the flower approximates real time, the second employes echo and reflects the slow motion of 1000 samples per second played back at 30. The last section (bluish) is keyed then time blended to accentuate the pattern the silhouette creates when the moth is in flight.

Root Tip Regeneration in Arabidopsis

Plants display a remarkable degree of plasticity, able to completely regenerate from dissociated single cells. The root tip of the model laboratory plant, Arabidopsis thaliana, houses a group of stem cells that constantly divide to allow growth. Remarkably, if the tip of the root (including all stem cells) is cut away, Arabidopsis is able to regenerate it completely from the remnant cells. This time lapse captures the first three days of this process, tracking cells' nuclei using a fluorescent protein fusion.

Our Curse

The film is a personal statement of the director and his wife, who have to deal with a very rare and incurable disease of their newborn child – the Ondine's Curse (also known as CCHS, congenital central hypoventilation syndrome). People affected with this disease stop breathing during sleep and require lifetime mechanical ventilation on a ventilator. The film shows the first few months of living together after the diagnosis. At the beginning, the child is still in hospital, but soon he comes home, with all his medical equipment. The film shows the process of taming the fear by the parents and gradually adapting to the new situation.

OMOTE / Real-Time Face Tracking & Projection Mapping

Project 'OMOTE' is a collaboration between Japanese media artist Nobumichi Asai, makeup artist Hiroto Kwahara and French digital image engineer Paul Lacroix.[Omote] is a Japanese word for face or a mask.
The face is considered a mirror that reflects the human soul, a separation between Omote (exterior) and Ura (interior), and in Nogaku, Japan's classical musical plays, performers use Omtoe masks to express a multitude of dramatic emotions.
As we spent more time on the project, we became more aware of its similarities with Nogaku's Omote masks and explored further possibilities through Integration of the latest technology and classical Japanese art.

Each team is "given a kit of biological parts at the beginning of the summer from the Registry of Standard Biological Parts. Working at their own schools over the summer, they use these parts and new parts of their own design to build biological systems and operate them in living cells." (http://igem.org/About)
Quanticare is a project developed in partnership between Amy Congdon, who acted as project facilitator and designers Ann-Kristin Abel and Jenny Lee, and the 2012 NRP-UEA iGEM team, with the aim of exploring the ethical implications of Synthetic Biology. The collaboration allowed the students to think about the wider context of their lab work and allowed the designers to explore what potential new materials and techniques they could be using in the future. The resulting film explores the potential future uses of the science the iGEM team have been working with, namely that of Nitric Oxide sensing. The team worked throughout the summer on developing a new method of quantitative computing using bacterial sensors, which has implications for cancer detection and treatment. The film presents a future with highly sensitive disease monitoring and personalised healthcare provided by the imagined company 'Quanticare'. The intention of the project was to explore the implications of this technology by presenting viewers with a way in which it may impact on their lives.

Climate change, exasperated by projects such as the Canadian tar sands, puts the life of large world populations in danger. Melting Himalayan ice fields, rising planetary sea levels, and extreme weather events increasingly impose an amphibian lifestyle on the Bangladeshi population. Gigantic machine-less efforts are made by communities to build protective mud embankments in the delta where large parts will soon be submerged and water is declared the territory of citizenship.
