Consciousness and unconsciousness, vision and hallucination, memory and forgetting, sleep, wakefulness, and dream. As much as we have been able to learn about our brains and their functions, particularly in the last century since the advent of modern neuroscience, what we still don't know cover a vast and mysterious territory. For our December issue, we'll probe these fuzzy edges of knowing and unknowing, as neurons attempt self-understanding, neuroscientists search in dreams, and new technologies that allow us deeper glimpses, and even complex modeling, of once-obscure neurological function.
At the Dream & Nightmare Laboratory at the University of Montreal, Elizaveta Solomonova is searching for expert dreamers: people who can visit dream land and report back accurately what they see, hear, feel, and even smell. For most of us, remembered dreams are filled with sights and maybe sounds. B
On the 10th anniversary of the First Alien Attack, this documentary tells the true story of Campi - the man who locked himself in his basement after a heartbreak, and incidentally cracked the code of Alien language.
When a scientist's latest attempt to scan the neural network of a brain into a computer construct fails, he must come to terms with the personal sacrifices he has made and the unusual results of his experiments. The Sierra Project is a short science fiction film written and directed by Gabriel de Ur
The "Centrifuge Brain Project" gives an insight on scientific experiments with amusement park rides. Based on his childhood fascination for the strange atmosphere of amusement parks Till Nowak created the fictional documentary 'The Centrifuge Brain Project'. He collected footage and used digital ani
Nobody would have guessed that Santiago, curious and creative born born in a small village near Navarra en Aragon would become the father of neuroscience and the first Nobel laureate in Spain in 1906. A film that balances the precision of a Swiss watch with the messiness of a restless mind, Wide Awake is filmmaker Alan Berliner's uniquely personal tour through his life-long obsession with insomnia. In the spirit of his highly acclaimed experimental documentary films, Intimate Stranger (1991), Nob
Diffusion MRI can provide information on the organization of neuronal tissue in vivo . Based on these images, fiber tract pathways can be reconstructed that represent the axonal wiring of the brain. Anatomical knowledge lets us select specific fiber bundles connecting two brain regions, in this case

It was the summer I started getting more restless. I was suddenly too fast, out of control, too much. Too much of everything.
Nerve cells, which can be switched on and off with light - this is possible through optogenetics. Ernst Bamberg at the Max Planck Institute of Biophysics in Frankfurt is working on improving this technology further to ensure that neuroscientists can learn more about our brain.
Inside the neuronal landscape is an entangled network where consciousness, memory and stimulus embolden everyone to feel unique. In reality, sentience isactually a stream of neural activity made up of billions of neurons engaging in amultitude of connections. It takes a unity of many to be an individ
