By studying phenomena such as the gallop of a horse and human walking, he introduced a new perception of living beings that continues to inspire visual and digital arts today.
An office located in the Californian desert. The self-imposed objective is no less far out: narrative landscaping. Eden´s Edge is a nine-part episodic film from the Office for Narrative Landscape Design initially marked by exceptional directorial sobriety. The visual settings for the life-stories it presents are based on a shared and stringently maintained master-plan. We see bird eye-views of minimalistic scenes, meticulously arranged in gray desert sands, usually furnished with but a few props. Within this context, seemingly lost and barely insect-size inhabitants move about, recluses, mavericks and freaks in the best sense of the word. They all have retreated to the desert, to reinvent their lives on the margins of an increasingly unbearable society. The short version compiles three selected episodes.

It is no secret that shoes say a lot about the person wearing them. The shoe´s form, material and condition provide insight into social status, character, and, last but not least, potential desires.
In Down to Earth, Anna Vasof refers to this multifunctional significance while putting a very particular spin on the concept of "footwear". After all, the artist fabricated highly distinctive mechanical devices for each of her 28 shoe designs, some of which set entire stories in motion upon walking.
There is for instance a fork that vainly fishes for an olive, or a hammer that pounds the shoe to its right with each step. Furthermore, umbrellas pop open to protect shoes, some shoes get caught in nets or vainly hunt for mice, while others successfully flip pancakes or use a foot pedal to blow a trumpet and beat a marching drum.
Alongside word play and more basic, everyday situations, Vasof uses the shoes she has designed to "film" more complex associations. The words "step" and "approved" are stamped out by the heels of a pair of stilettos, while a rear-view mirror mounted on cowboy boots reveals the vanity of the person wearing them and his passion for cars.
As with each miniature, the individual step is always an important motor, each time it sets a distinct rhythm relevant to its particular story. Individual steps are therefore edited in a military staccato when it comes to army boots that chase an arrow, but the tempo is almost perfectly steady when it comes to a lady´s shoe coquettishly swinging while it sprawls out in the breeze of a fan.

When you are a child, you imagine that toys and furniture come to life as soon as you look away. Freud calls this phase "magical thinking" when one half hopes and half fears that things are able to keep a secret from us.
In her short film series "Recyclers," animation artist and sound designer Nikki Schuster takes up these thoughts and lets items culled from the trash of various metropolises dance while founding their own subculture. In the experimental photo animation absent she goes one step further and finds life where the human element has long departed: a microscopic view submerges directly into slender plastic pipes and dusty cracks in walls in vacated buildings in Spain, Bolivia, Mexico, Bosnia, Croatia, and Germany. Glistening light alternates with the black of concealed corners in the debris- and trash-filled rooms.
Schuster's stop-motion technique assures that the cinematic gaze seems anything but human while doing this: at times it is unnaturally accelerated, other times, slowed down; sometimes it moves through the abandoned space as though the space itself were letting its perception wander. Perhaps the building yearns for its old inhabitants who upon their departure carelessly tossed the relicts of the pre-digital era into the corner. A group of magnet ribbons still makes its last rounds on the dirty concrete floor. A cigarette butt, which also failed to make the leap into the new era, is the only passenger on a rotating metal reel.
Rusty ribs of folding chairs lounge in front of the door and the plates give a tired struggle in the sink: it may well be that the future is virtual. But the world of things lives, and will outlive us all.

Conceptual visualisations based on Eric Betzig's Nobel-winning work for the development of super-resolved fluorescence microscopy. This tomographic technique uses light-sheets to provide a highly detailed, three-dimensional, animated view of the microscopic world revealing a groundbreaking picture of complex cellular processes and forms. The recordings of biological processes using this technique were artistically reinterpreted and recreated as 3d simulations which were then used to extract final images for print. In PLANET ∑, giant creatures are trapped inside the ice. Submarine explosions provoke a global warming, and a new life begins for animals. This is the third piece from the PLANET series, after PLANET A (Locarno 2008) and PLANET Z (Berlinale 2011).
With the publication of the Ophthalmographia in 1632, the Amsterdam physician Vopiscus Fortunatus Plempius sheds new light on the age-old question of how seeing works. His answer is an invitation to experiment: Enter with me into a darkened room and prepare the eye of a freshly slaughtered cow. He emphasizes that anyone may carry out this experiment, at home, "demanding little effort and expense." "And you, standing in the darkened room, behind the eye, shall see a painting that perfectly represents all objects from the outside world," promises Plempius. In the short film In Waking Hours we see historian Katrien Vanagt - who studied the Latin writings of this Plempius - cloaked in the skin of a 21st-century disciple of Plempius. Her cousin, filmmaker Sarah Vanagt, is there and captures how this modern "Plempia" meticulously follows her teacher's instructions. Thus, in a dark kitchen in Brussels, they become witnesses at the birth of images upon the eye.
Pierre Bergounioux is one of the great writers of our time. While his work has a universal appeal, it also has its favored territories of exploration: history and literature, memory and the act of writing, childhood and the Corrèze region. A voice, indeed, but also a body—gnarled, vibrant, Giacometti-esque. Consumed by his passions, Pierre fiercely collects objects and the words to recount them—scraps of iron, insects, everything…Six months ago, he and I set off together to the Plateau de Millevaches in Corrèze. I had asked him to go there to capture his favorite insects for us—a butterfly, a hawk moth, some hoplia beetles. We had ten days. It was in June, it should have been sunny, abounding with insects. But that would have been too easy. It would not have been the Plateau. It would not have been Pierre.
