The Mathematics Engraver

FILM France 2016 · 26 min
Quentin Lazzarotto

La Motte-Chalancon, Drôme provençale, Winter 2016. A black-cloaked figure paces the narrow, crooked streets of the medieval village, as if straight out of a gothic film: muttering mathematical formulae, Patrice Jeener is taking us to his house, where he introduces us to his work – hundreds of engravings representing mathematical objects, concepts and graphs.

Do you know what a double-sheeted hyperboloid looks like? Or a seven-dimensional hypercube? Patrice Jeener, one of the last artist-engravers, draws and engraves such objects in metal, and his art is informed by these mathematical objects. For him, as for mathematicians, human imagination is not bounded by our earthly dimensions, and for 50 years he has been combining the purity of equations with the elegance of copper and chisel.

Through this neglected art of engraving, he gives tangibility to the obscure imaginary world of mathematicians. He gives shape to the most complex equations and, under his chisel, mathematical symbols become the aesthetic expression of an impalpable dimension. These arabesque-like shapes are each a science-fiction dream, a dream of a universe come true, and transport us to the very heart of the mysterious realms of mathematics and artistic creation – two worlds that are ultimately not all that different.

When You Look Away

FILM Denmark 2017 · 84 min
Phie Ambo

Where are the limits of consciousness and are we connected in ways we never knew? ...when you look away will take you on an expedition into the unknown territory of the human consciousness.

How far does consciousness reach? And are we maybe connected with each other in ways that we never knew? It is not the first time that Phie Ambo embarks on dissecting the relationship between the physical limits and the metaphysical realm – but this time the film itself is part of that effort. Ambo uses her topic as a deliberate obstruction: she is not allowed to make contact with the participants – they either have to come to her by themselves or be referred to her by others. And the lines between the dots extend from physicist genius Holger Bech Nielsen to a clairvoyant woman, and from quantum physics to a laboratory for vitalised water in Jutland. Questions lead to answers which lead to new questions – which lead to surprises that will astonish even the most hardboiled skeptics. Several of them even end up participating in Ambo's consciousness experiment themselves. Coincidence or what? A thought-provoking film from the unknown borderland between science and alternative world views.

Golden Genes

FILM Austria 2016 · 89 min
Clemens Stachel Wolfgang Konrad Ursula Hansbauer

The frozen, bodiless genes of millions of plants, animals and humans are stored in biobanks around the world. Together with corn seed, the stem cells of polar bears and frozen drops of human blood — rekindled dreams of old are travelling towards potential futures: re-creating species threatended with extinction, ending world hunger, and human life without illness or disease.

The documentary film "Golden Genes" embarks on an expedition to some of the largest, oldest and most contemporary archives of life — from the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Spitsbergen, to the animal cell banks of the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, and the largest biodiversity storage in the world in Shenzhen, China. Biobanks such as these are data centres in the global network of the genetic research community. The information that they generate from the DNA of various living organisms provides the basis of today’s life sciences.

But biobanks do more than that. Within their freezers the boundaries between lifeforms are blurred. Fungal, bacterial, or human — it’s all the same to the technology. Biobanks pose a fundamental question to humankind: what does it mean to be part of nature in the age of the genome?

Things that were unthinkable 20 years ago are discussed by scientists interviewed in the film as concrete research projects. The storage of every DNA molecule on the planet — an idea closely related to the century–old history of genetics — has now become a real possibility.

Caught somewhere between nature film and political documentary, "Golden Genes" outlines the enormous challenge that the comprehensive study of biodiversity presents to society, but also to our image of humankind.

Catherine Ryan Gary Weimberg

Meet Dr. Marian Diamond as she pulls a human brain out of a hatbox and lovingly enumerates its astonishing qualities. MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE BRAIN follows this remarkable woman over a 5-year period and introduces the viewer to both her many scientific accomplishments and the warm, funny, and thoroughly charming woman herself, who describes her 60-year career researching the human brain as "pure joy."

As one of the founders of modern neuroscience, Dr. Diamond challenged orthodoxy and changed our understanding of the brain--its plasticity, its response to enrichment and to experiences that shape both development and aging. Her groundbreaking work is all the more remarkable because it began during an era when so few women entered science at all. Shouted at from the back of the conference hall by noteworthy male academics as she presented her research, and disparaged in the scientific journals, Dr. Diamond simply did the work and followed where her curiosity led her, bringing about a paradigm shift in the process. As she points out, in order to get to the answers that matter, you have to start by asking the right questions.
