What do the wild waves say? In the wake of Saturn and Beyond (Georges de Beauregard International Prize, FID 2021), Declan Clarke is listening again. The waves, here, are those which, through the writer Francis Stuart, connected the Irish nationalist movement to Nazi Germany in the heart of the 20th century: anti-English chronicles for German radio from 1940 to 1944, a pirate transmitter transported to Ireland, infiltration of agents with his wife who remained in the country... The filmmaker puts himself in the role of the writer but never lets us hear his voice, as if to distance himself from the power of the radio broadcast as a vector of discourse. Rigorous and playful, both lively and melancholic, this film is a meditation on political compromises and the mass media that are their tools.
