On July 25, 1943, Mussolini is arrested. During the night, the Grand Council of Fascism convened, and they voted to oust the Duce, who now finds himself in a barracks, monitored by the police, overwhelmed by a sudden twist of fate. Meanwhile, Italy remains oblivious. It's an epilogue without witnesses; no one knows what is happening. The country woke up to the sound of the usual war bulletin: it's clear, despite the leaders trying to conceal the truth, that the situation is desperate. On the military front, with numerous failures, and at home, amidst incessant bombings and the now chronic shortage of basic necessities. The population is demoralized, shaken by mourning, destruction, and hunger. The health of the Duce has also been compromised for a while, plagued by severe abdominal pains, likely of a nervous nature, which have often forced him to be absent from his duties, adding another layer of uncertainty. These are dark months when the world seems out of control, "the system can no longer hold, the speed of events shakes it, surpasses it, and lays it bare, revealing its true face beneath the titanic and grandiloquent mask." Later, there will be the armistice signed by Badoglio, the Republic of Salò, the partisan war. But at that moment, Italians still do not know where the unstoppable current of history will drag them. Journalist Ezio Mauro reenacts the final days of the fascist state, narrating a country teetering between a declining regime and a future that has not yet taken shape.
