Between 1995 and 2000, the UNAM Film Library produced a documentary series of five programs about five natural areas in our country. This project marked the foray of UNAM's filmmaking activities into the natural history or nature documentary genre, which is part of the so-called scientific outreach film industry. With this project, the University sought to bring the importance of conservation and proper management of biodiversity to Mexico into the realm of cultural dissemination. The images that comprise México...naturalmente were mostly recorded on 16mm film and subsequently edited and post-produced in analog video for broadcast on selected cultural television stations. Two of the documentaries: Xochimilco, the struggle for survival and Selva Lacandona, won awards at the Ronda Scientific Film Festival in Spain.
