The second film in a trilogy of works which observe ecosystems bordering urban San Diego. A flock of Cliff Swallows oscillates between their nest along the Interstate 5 Freeway, and the San Dieguito River. The video is made up of triptych compositions of the birds’ flight, their nests on the freeway, and the San Dieguito River Park. Two texts accompany the footage: “Cliff Swallows-Missouri Breaks,” a poem by Debra Nystrom, and “Where has all the roadkill gone?” a scientific paper by Brown & Brown (2013). Through the film’s structure and content, I seek to chart the oscillations of the cliff swallows’ flight, and to probe at the overlapping border spaces between natural and constructed, rural and urban, and science and art.
