Consider three locations. 1. A workshop located in Germany where we follow the making of a prosthetic hand. 2. A traditional glove-making workshop in Millau, in the south of France. 3. A jeans factory in Istanbul, a large-scale industrial production. Three workspaces that follow one another, but a common method and object: the relationships between hand and machine, work and material, observed with patience and rigor. Relationships and gestures that Daniel Eisenberg strives to scrutinize meticulously, attentive to each action that this involves and the time required for each operation, from the beginning to the finished forms. Eisenberg continues here the project initiated in his previous installment, The Unstable Object (FID 2011), where he compared, already through triangulation, work in a high-tech automobile factory in Dresden, then in an outdated watch repair workshop in Chicago, and finally in a cymbal factory in Istanbul. Here, space is given to hands, to the body, to the image, from one place of production to another: reconstituted bodies, modeled bodies, dressed bodies. To the social body too, whether collective bodies at work or their images shaped by the objects whose manufacture we follow. The patience of an attentive camera and the fascinating rhythm of this choreography allow the gestures to unfold. The geography of production modes also engages the history it underlies, such as that of the globalization of trade. And, crucial here, the time of the production of the objects themselves seems to respond to that of the spectator facing the unfolding of the film, like an echo between absorbed gazes, theirs as well as ours. A beautiful work of the gaze and of thought in action on work, a very unstable object.
