This film is about the record-breaking dives to three of the world's deepest ocean trenches, during Caladan Oceanic's Challenger Deep, Palau & Yap Expedition 2022. It describes the dives of Explorer Victor Vescovo, Founder of Caladan Oceanic and Limiting Factor submersible pilot with: (1) Dr. Dawn Wright, Chief Scientist of mapping company Esri, who then became the first person of any gender and of African descent to dive to Challenger Deep, the deepest point on Earth, and to successfully operate a sidescan sonar at full-ocean depth. The maximum depth recorded was a preliminary 10,919 meters, +/-6 meters; (2) Master Navigator Sesario Sewralur of Micronesia to the Yap Trench. Sesario is also the son of the famous Yapese traditional navigator Mau Piailug who is credited with helping the Hawaiians re-learn their traditional navigation through the building and journeys of the Hokule'a canoes; and (3) President Tommy Esang Remengesau, Jr. to Palau Trench. He had recently completed his fourth term as president of the Republic of Palau. Unlike Challenger Deep, no human has EVER reviously visited the deepest points of the Yap and Palau Trenches, and mechanical probes into them have been very rare. Both trenches were extensively mapped in detail by the expedition using their onboard multibeam sonar system prior to the dives to identify the deepest points and areas of interest to explore in the submersible.
