The documentary The Last Year of Darkness is a tantalizing portrait of the underground scene in Chengdu, China. Now IDFA is bringing that scene to real life at an Amsterdam club. This dance event will feature scenes from the hundreds of hours of raw material and music by the film’s stars and editor.

In the DJ booth will be the Chengdu DJs Kimberly, Darkle, 647, and Gena, along with Marco from the Netherlands, a veteran of Chengdu’s underground party scene. In a second booth, the film’s editor Bobby Moser will be live-mixing a new montage of the film projected onto a big screen behind him—making him a main character in his own film. The event will also feature a drag performance by influencer Yihao, a high-profile visitor and performer at Funky Town, the club at the film’s center.

The makers of the film are using this club event to introduce a new kind of film experience, in which frenetic techno is only part of the vibe—in an adjoining room you’ll see film scenes of candid conversations taking place at night, or in the cold light of day.
