This Afrofuturist, queer-forward, hybrid documentary is set in a utopian future where Black and Indigenous ancestors, or ‘past parents’, have succeeded in prison abolition after decades of struggle. Celebrating this achievement means understanding the history of the American prison complex and the principles of transformative justice – investing in healthcare, forgiveness and accountability within community. Mixing archive footage with the voices of contemporary revolutionaries and abolitionist artists from across the US, Space to Breathe teaches us that our battles for a better world are not in vain.
