Until recently Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) was the most common hereditary disease leading to death in young children. The Disease let the muscles atrophy, including the respiratory muscles. Thanks to RNA-based therapy, treatment is now possible. The University of Bern is making an important contribution to basic research in this field.
