Cajal in his old age and in his office wrote his memoirs: in 1874 his transfer to the expeditionary army in Cuba and his stay in this land, where he fell seriously ill. His father tries to dissuade him but fails. With letters of introduction that his father gave him and that Cajal did not use, he disembarked in Havana and while awaiting his destination he dedicated himself to photography and painting. In Vista Hermosa, one of the worst destinations, he chats with a sick man who later dies. He feels depressed and disappointed: instead of adventures he has found misery and conspiracies. Ask for relief. He begins to be quite ill and receives letters from his girlfriend from Zaragoza. In the attack of the Mabises, he defends the post with his sick people and is later transferred to Port-au-Prince, where he will recover from his malarial anemia. He does not receive his pay, so he will confront General Grau and later, at his destination in San Isidro, the commander of the post for irregularities in the meals of the sick.

Pide el relevo. Comienza a estar bastante enfermo y recibe cartas de su novia desde Zaragoza. En ataque de los Mabises defiende el puesto con sus enfermos y después es trasladado a Puerto Príncipe, donde se recuperará de su anemia palúdica. No recibe su paga, por lo que se enfrentará al general Grau y más tarde, en su destino de San Isidro, al comandante del puesto por irregularidades en las comidas de los enfermos.
