Pseudosphinx is the scientific name for fire caterpillars that soon become butterflies, or as they are commonly (and ominously) called, hags. These butterfly hags are associated with various myths. The Pseudosphinx is both a sphinx, an inhuman, conical monstrosity that poses riddles, and pseudo, which refers to the artificial, false, deceptive, unreal, illusory, and mimetic. Pseudophynx keeps its meaning hidden, like a secret kept by those who preserve the haptic impression of its struggle on their retinas.
