On May 4, 1962, Malcolm X held a press conference at the Los Angeles Statler‑Hilton Hotel in response to a deadly LAPD raid of Nation of Islam’s Mosque No. 27 that occurred on April 27, 1962. The police attack left Ronald Stokes, a Muslim and Korean War veteran, killed, and six others wounded. Malcolm X used the press conference to confront official narratives, present graphic evidence of police brutality, denounce systemic racism in the LAPD, and bring international attention to the event.
