In search of the reasons for his chronic insomnia, the director films his own investigation into sleep. Gradually widening his investigations, he goes to meet other plant and animal species. Living beings watch, sleep and dream. The wakeful sleeper questions these different states of consciousness and the difficulty humans have in synchronising their social rhythm with their biological rhythm.
