Laklãnõ/Xokleng: the orphans of the Valle presents the history of the Laklãnõ/Xokleng, indigenous people who lives in the Itajaí Valley, in Santa Catarina, south of Brazil. The documentary relates the arrival of European immigrants in their territory, in the mid-nineteenth century, with the current living conditions. Perceiving the tradition of oral history as a way of reaffirming and preserving the Laklãnõ/Xokleng culture, the narrative is based mainly on the testimonies of indigenous people and is divided into three moments: (1) the arrival of immigrants and the consequent indigenous genocid, (2) violence and dispossession of traditional territories and (3) the current scenario of threat to the human rights of the Laklãnõ/Xokleng, such as the non-homologation of the Ibirama-Laklãnõ Indigenous Land, awaited since 2003, and the murder of the indigenous leader Marcondes Namblá, in January 2018.
