The documentary traces Jack Johnson’s rise from making surf videos with friends on Oahu’s North Shore to becoming one of the most recognizable voices in modern music. Before his chart-topping career, Johnson was known as a promising surfer and filmmaker, capturing his friends, many of the world’s best surfers, on 16mm film in Thicker Than Water and The September Sessions. These surf films helped redefine modern surf culture. What began as a visual study of the ocean and friendship evolved when Johnson started recording songs for his soundtracks. Those songs struck a chord far beyond surfing, launching a music career rooted in creativity, community, and the rhythm of the sea.
