In Glorious Smell-O-Vision! The True Story of the Godfather of Scented Cinema is a scented documentary about flamboyant Swiss scientist Hans Laube, and Scent of Mystery (1960), a star studded Hollywood whodunit which debuted the ill-fated "Smell-O-Vision" process - later dubbed one of Time’s “100 Worst Ideas of All Time.”
Six decades later, Australian filmmaker Tammy Burnstock revisits Laube’s maligned invention, teaming up with his daughter Carmen and the Institute for Art and Olfaction to recreate the experience at the Cinerama Dome in Hollywood. Along they way she uncovers a poignant story of innovation, failure, and redemption, asking: when it comes to movies, why not the nose?
This documentary is designed to be experienced with scent. For theatrical release, we provide the fragrances in various formats. For this online screening we suggest that you visit Field Notes for suggestions for fragrant elements to sniff and when appropriate eat when a nose and number appear on screen.
