Peyangki is a dreamy and solitary eight-year-old monk living with his mother in the remote village of Laya in Bhutan. TV will soon come to the village. In 1999, King Jigme Wangchuck approved the use of television and Internet throughout his largely undeveloped nation known for its “gross national happiness.” With his uncle, Peyangki takes a three-day journey to the capital Thimphu to buy a TV set. Along the way, the boy discovers cars, toilets and city lights for the first time. Does TV bring happiness or will progress destroy an ancient way of life?
