Set in the semi-urban wetlands of Howrah, Fishing Cat: The Pride of Bengal is a 45-minute documentary on India’s state animal of West Bengal—the elusive Fishing Cat—while exploring its fragile coexistence with local communities. From bustling Kolkata suburbs to quiet marshlands, it captures villagers whose livelihoods—fishing, farming, weaving—remain inseparable from wetland ecology, yet perceptions of the cat as a threat often spark conflict.
Filmmaker Kaushik Mukhopadhyay, with conservationist Subhajit Maity, undertakes a determined quest to document this nocturnal predator, overcoming challenges of low-light filming, camera trapping, and rescues. Along the journey, researchers, fishermen, and grassroots conservationists unite under the campaign SAVE WETLAND SAVE FISHING CAT.
