This video was the result of three consecutive trips during the summer of 2018 that took me, temporarily, away from the comforts and distractions of New York City. The first was a visit to Ecuador with my daughter Madeline and a family friend whose grandniece was performing in a belly dancing competition. During the next excursion, I was as a guest (along with Kristin Anderson) of a wealthy entrepreneur, who entertained, for one full weekend, mostly on his yacht as well as in and around Montauk, Long Island, his clients and freelance vendors and assistants. And the third, also with Kristin, was to her hometown of Kalamazoo, Michigan to meet her mom (and other family members) on the occasion of her mom’s birthday. These journeys, and several video sketches, coupled with a series of poetic phrases that Maddy crafted with a random set of magnetic letters on a refrigerator door (and that I subsequently re-formed into a narrative poem). This film, essentially is essentially an existential travelogue that is layered through several different approaches into a moving image collage and that, in part, subjectively examines what is transpiring collectively, politically, and environmentally all around us.
