Burrocracy is a work-in-progress feature documentary that examines complicated notions of invasive species and wilderness management through the story of Nevada and California's wild burro populations. Brought by miners in the 1800s, these donkeys (or burros, as many call them) have lived many generations removed from human contact, subsisting off the land, weathering extreme desert temperatures, reproducing and making a life for themselves. As the human population spreads, and water shortages in the West worsen, there is ever more contact and conflict between burros and people. Combining history, ecology, politics and culture, Burrocracy will illuminate the complexity of human-burro relations, and explore the ethical role of humanity in the management of wild animals and wild places.
