From day to night, Block is a portrait of a 1960s London high-rise; its interior and exterior spaces are explored and revealed, the types of activity building a rhythm and visual experience similar to the daily observations of the security guard, sitting, watching the flashing screens with their fixed viewing angles and certain action elements their escaping.
Block was made over a period of 10 months in a tower block building in South West London, from 2004 to 2005. The film is a portrait of the location, resulting from the long period of time spent there. The contrast between the exterior and interior of the building, the impersonal common spaces and the personal spaces of the interior of people's apartments gives shape to the portrait.
The security guards' office and the database of CCTV screens, with their patterns approaching random editing, and missing action elements, were used as a starting point in terms of camera technology, and structures editing techniques used in the film. See everything, but see nothing at the same time. Working with a static camera, the still shots are repeated and edited together in a sequence, in a manner similar to the CCTV recording that rapid shift from one surveillance camera angle to another, often interrupting the ' narration' (visual).
The soundtrack was constructed from recordings made on location at the time of filming, and sounds collected from different sources, and was composed and mixed by Jonah Fox.
