Each year in June, five billion sardines come together to form the largest living organism on the planet. The beast of Natal, forming a column of twenty miles by two, began the most incomprehensible of animal migration: three months and five thousand miles, explain neither by reproduction nor the need for food, and weaken the species by facilitating the work of predators.
