Àvia, which means grandmother in Catalan, portrays Montserrat Gispert Cruells, who as a child flees Barcelona with her family during the Spanish Civil War and arrives in Mexico in 1941. Rodrigo, her grandson and the film’s director, accompanies her in her final days as she reflects on her identity, her life as an ethnobotanist, her family legacy, exile, and the right to a dignified death. Together, they wander through her garden of memories.
