The DESI Education & Public Outreach committe produced a 22 minutes planetarium show about the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) in collaboration with the production team at Fiske Planetarium. It's titled "5000 EYES: Mapping the Universe with DESI"
This film, aimed at the general public, covers our scientific motivation, describes how DESI is making the most complete map of our nearby universe, and reveals what it’s like to be a DESI scientist. This content is fitting for planetariums, as they are uniquely suited to teach about a 3D map of galaxies and give an immersive view of the instrument itself. We structured the film to take advantage of existing media, and additionally included several original animations, visualizations of DESI data, and original footage taken by the DESI members on Kitt Peak.
The resulting film is available for free to planetariums around the world. Fiske also created a flat version, which is on YouTube. It is part of the regular programming for dozens of planetarium around the world. By translating the narration to 3+ languages (I did the voiceover for the French version), we are ensuring this project has a broad and diverse reach. The film is well-suited to accompany a live talk or Q&A with a scientist, so can serve as a vehicle for DESI members to engage with their local communities. This planetarium show is an immersive way to make our science accessible, create positive awareness about DESI, and be a tool for local outreach all over the world.
