The oxygen we breathe consists of two bonded oxygen atoms—O₂. These atoms were first joined over 3 billion years ago by the most primitive algae. Since then, both together and apart, these two atoms have had extraordinary adventures, playing key roles in some of Earth’s most spectacular historical events.
