Botschafter des Erinnerns (Ambassador Of Remembrance)

FILM Austria 2024 · 100 min
Magdalena Żelasko

In September 1943, 17-year-old Stanisław Zalewski was arrested in Warsaw as a member of a Polish resistance group and taken to the Auschwitz-Birkenau extermination camp for labour service. From there, he was sent to Mauthausen and finally to the Gusen camp, where the prisoners were forced to work for the German armaments industry under inhumane conditions. For a long time, Stanisław Zalewski, like many other victims of Nazi terror, remained silent about his painful experiences. It was only after forty years that he began to talk about it, at events, memorial services, and in schools, and he continues to do so to this day, even at the age of 99. Now, for the first time, he tells his stirring life story in a film as a deeply impressive ‘ambassador of remembrance’.

FILM Ukraine, France, Belgium 2025 · 93 min
Yegor Troyanovsky

Codenamed Cuba and Alaska, two field medics serving on the frontlines of the Ukrainian conflict regard the absurdity of war with a combination of grit, humour and hope. Mostly comprising footage from phones and GoPro cameras attached to their helmets and chests, the film offers rare access to the medics’ daily lives, their reliance on each other a testament to the camaraderie required to survive in this world. But when one of them is injured and they are separated, the realisation of how despairing the conflict can become gradually sinks in. A raw and powerful film, Cuba & Alaska is an essential reminder of the importance of human connection, especially at a time when hope in the direst of circumstances feels increasingly elusive.

Divia

FILM Poland, Ukraine, Netherlands 2025 · 79 min
Dmytro Hreshko

War is primarily a human tragedy, but we should not forget that nature typically suffers with us. The documentary film Divia is a darkly immersive meditation which brings to light Russia's unprecedented aggression on Ukrainian soil and its grievous impact on places that issue their indictments in silence: forests turned to ash, fields ravaged by explosions, flooded towns, or rusted hulks of military hardware in devastated regions, where life has faded away. But nature doesn’t just give up and, like her, neither does man and his ambiguous existence. As one side brings destruction, the other – mine clearance personnel, people searching for bodies, ecologists – quantifies the aftermath of the tragedy and restores fragile Ukrainian ecosystems, even while the horizon rumbles on.

The Mystical Canyon of Rakitnica is a documentary about human curiosity and desire to discover and see something that is hidden and unreachable, despite the difficulties and dangers that arise along the way. The film follows a group of enthusiasts and adventurers who struggle to survive in the wilderness, as they descend the steep cliffs of this naturally carved phenomenon of surreal, mystical beauty. They face injuries, hypothermia, and inability to communicate with the outside world. The Rakitnica Canyon, with its steep cliffs and unpredictable flow, poses a barrier to human curiosity. Located near Sarajevo, the Rakitnica River carves a 26-kilometer-long canyon, one of Europe’s deepest, reaching up to one kilometre in depth, and only one meter in width. It is said that fewer people have traversed this canyon from end to end, than have travelled to space.
