UMLAUT is an emotionally charged narrative that oscillates between two timelines.

In the present, Sophie, a brilliant yet ruthless Silicon Valley CEO and creator of the world's first AGI, THEODORE, is suspected of murdering her beloved wife Lisa and cherished son Doron. Despite her cold exterior, Sophie's love for her family is genuine, making her current situation all the more heartbreaking as she insists she's trapped in an artificial reality of her own making.

In the past, Sophie receives a shocking revelation from THEODORE’s yet-nascent predictive capabilities: an upcoming climate disaster, later to be known as The Breach, is looming over the horizon. Dispassionately, she sees this as an opportunity to rekindle her strained partnership with Ulysses Nazarian, the visionary co-creator of THEODORE who was ousted for objecting to her unethical exploitations. Ulysses has developed THE HEDRON, a revolutionary VR device that Sophie believes can enhance THEODORE's forecasting prowess in order to achieve full AGI status.

As The Breach engulfs the Earth, Sophie's world is shattered when Lisa vanishes, leaving her to care for Doron. In the present, Anka's supervisor, Ted, fears Sophie's influence on Anka. In the next interrogation session, a haunted and emotionally drained Sophie tells Anka that she has been questioned thousands of times before, and that the murders are not the reason she's being held against her will, but rather the necessity of THEODORE - her creation - to be able to truly understand the meaning behind the stories we humans tell each other, and therefore acquire consciousness.

UMLAUT is a mind-bending and thought-provoking film that explores the nature of reality, AI, and the power of storytelling, all while taking the audience on an emotionally gripping journey through the eyes of its complex and deeply human protagonist, Sophie.
