This is a work in progress, in continuation of my attempts in the shorts "Silk Roads Trip: Blue Dream" and "Threads." Using a computational pipeline I have developed, I analyzed dozens of textile and ceramic patterns, all the way from China to England. Then, using this analysis, I created fusion patterns out of them. Finally, I animated transitions between the new fusion patterns, exposing their similarities and continuities.
Here, I again build on my previous experiments in intermedial translations of patterns and motifs, tracing how geometric and abstract elements travel across textiles, tiles, ceramics, woodwork, and digital “canvases.” The project stages an artistic demonstration of entanglement across media and across cultures. Once again, the project offers an artistic demonstration of the intricate entanglements--across diverse cultures as well as media--that such forms enable. It also gestures toward a "quantum ecology" in the metaphorical sense: a relational field shaped by cultural and material constraints, within which forms take shape as one possibility is realized among many.
