The artist films one of the first automata created by the watchmaker Pierre Jaquet-Droz in 1770—a complex construction comprising over 6,000 parts, which likens it to the earliest computers. The automaton follows the writing of its text with its eyes: "What do you believe—your eyes or my words?" This piece belongs to a series of works by the artist—ranging from "Marilyn" to "Ann Lee"—centered on the automaton and the virtual creature. These characters, endowed with a fantasized consciousness, lie at the very heart of his artistic practice.
