What happens when you feed an AI system the groundbreaking 1982 documentary Koyaanisqatsi? Godfrey Reggio’s film, and the mesmerizing accompanying musical score by Philip Glass, hypnotically explored the ever-increasing tension between nature, humans and technology. The Vivid Unknown, co-directed by Reggio and John Fitzgerald, makes a logical and exciting sequel to his Qatsi trilogy.

Koyaanisqatsi, released just prior to the birth of the internet, explores the tension between humans—the creators of technology—and nature. With the arrival of AI, the vivid unknown, an era has begun in which technology also shapes the world. Reams have now been written about how AI is set to change our lives, but little is known for certain. This reflection in image and sound may perhaps offer a glimpse of the future.

The installation responds to visitors and generates new images and music in the style of the original Koyaanisqatsi. The number of visitors and the nature of their movements influence its output.
