Nicholas Roerich — artist, archaeologist, writer and theosophist — undertakes a utopian mission he calls the “Sacred Union of the East.” In this period of his life he journeys across Mongolia, presenting a spiritual‑looking persona, yet beneath the surface he aligns with Bolshevik Russia. As he traverses terrain and cultures, his outward appearance gradually transforms to reveal deeper intent: bridging America, Buddhist Asia, Bolshevik Russia and India, while simultaneously highlighting the fractures this union hides.
