The Mermaids, or Aiden in Wonderland

This film is currently not available.
The Mermaids, Mirror Worlds is a two-channel video installation that juxtaposes the fictional world of The Mermaids, or Aiden in Wonderland—a future landscape devastated by industrial toxicity—with nonfictional promotional material from multinational chemical and industrial corporations including Monsanto and Dow Chemical.
The two screens create a confrontation between corporate claims about the safety and benefits of industrial capitalism and an Indigenous speculative vision of a world damaged by that same system. The work asks viewers to consider which competing vision of the future more accurately describes the consequences of environmental exploitation.
The work addresses colonialism, Indigenous sovereignty, extractive capitalism, environmental toxicity, corporate propaganda, climate crisis, and competing forms of knowledge.
