“Humanity and non-humanity have always performed an intricate dance with each other. There was never a time when human agency was anything other than an inter-folding network of humanity and non-humanity.” - Vibrant Matter, Jane Bennett
The documentation of a 'collaborative' living installation or 'happening', which honoured - and danced with - the beauty I saw in the brief daily play of light on this shady section of the River Segadell, Catalonia. A sculpture made from the fine, dark carbonated silt of the river slowly disintegrates in the water, the shape designed to temporarily capture and hold the dancing light.
Filmed on Super 8, the abstraction of the image emphasises the sense of being immersed in vibrancy which is at the core of the work. The sound piece aims to compliment and further enhance this sense of energy with the final outcome having being presented as an immersive installation.
The sound weaves together abstract vocalisations, recordings of the river, distortion and a score made by cyborg artist Manel de Aguas. Manel has developed and installed weather sensory fins to their body and through this is able to hear atmospheric pressure, humidity and temperature changes. Using the climate data for the location and time of the filming their score aurally communicates the weather at the time of the happening.
Together image and sound resonate between each other forming a sensory encounter with the entangled agency of light, water, matter and perception.
