Ayse returns from Germany to her home village in the Turkish mountains to see her seriously ill mother one last time. The dying woman’s last wish is momentous: Ayse must take care of her beloved beehives. Urban life has long since torn her away from the environment of her childhood, where caring for the endangered bees was central. With the help of a local beekeeper, she attempts to understand the mysterious language of nature. The loss of her mother figure and the feeling of estrangement from her own land become painfully visible to her when a serious problem threatens the beehives. With its strong visual language, THE HIVE illustrates the contrasts of city and country, tradition and modernity. The Turkish film star Meryem Üzerli embodies a woman in search of her own roots.
