THE GREAT CALL will be a creative, compelling, spectacular and immersive film-based exploration of the nature, culture and significance of gibbons, soundscapes and musicality. The title harks to the haunting morning calls of these apes that travel across the canopies and feature in thousands of years worth of poetry, folklore and music but also hints at a greater philosophical purpose for humanity. Through a linear film, XR experience and art exhibit THE GREAT CALL progressively upgrades participants’ experiences from viewer to full rainforest immersion.

Unlike conventional wildlife documentaries, THE GREAT CALL film will be structured around a retelling of gibbon parables from three locations where the gibbons coexist in harmony with their fellow human primates. Each tale will provide a unique relationship to modern day impacts facing the gibbon in their natural habitat highlighting Indigenous people who rely on the shared habitat. The opportunity to address conservation will be obvious but rather than directly tackling this controversial and tired topic, our perspective will be one of reflection, inspiration, action and realism.
