The Entomologist is a daughter’s documentation of my family’s lifetime work with insects, particularly worms. After working for the local Insect Control Department over thirty years, my father became increasingly disturbed by the ecological repercussions of insect extermination just as he wondered if there was a way to value the worms he had been exterminating. In a simultaneous effort to reconnect with his family’s rural village in Guilin province, and to create a humane and sustainable food source for the world’s growing human population, my family decided to build a worm farm. They hope that this burgeoning business and his growing understanding of worms can lead to a reacceptance of worms in today’s society and future culinary traditions. While the film uses an intimate lens to tell a family story, it also explores many intersecting questions of our time, including the relationship between humans and insects, climate change and sustainability, and China’s rapid urbanization that is rapidly changing ways of life.
